Why clutter clearing can be like pushing a hippopotamus uphill

Doing clutter clearing by yourself can be a daunting proposition. Where to start? How to do it? What to keep and let go? What to do if you get stuck?

Hippopotamus

Have you ever neglected exercise and needed to get fit again? At first it feels like pushing a hippopotamus uphill. But if you persist, the hippo develops wheels and eventually wings. Then what used to be a huge effort becomes so routine that it’s nothing at all.

Getting started with clutter clearing can feel the same. At first, it feels overwhelming and insurmountable. But like exercise, it begins by taking the first step. Also like exercise, it gets easier the more of it you do. I call this “building your clutter clearing muscle”.

Getting help

One of the best investments I ever made in my life was working with a personal trainer for a few years. He helped me to achieve a level of fitness that I had tried very hard to achieve by myself yet never managed to do so.

Similarly, what most people need when tackling their clutter is to learn from someone who has mastered the skill and knows how to teach others how to do it. It’s not something that’s taught in schools, after all. If you didn’t learn how to do clutter clearing when you were young, how will you know how to do it when you’re an adult?

Initially, I was reluctant to pay someone to help me get fit. It felt like something I ought to be able to figure out by myself. It’s my body, after all. But the skills I learned have set me up for a lifetime of fitness, just as learning clutter clearing skills can set you up for a lifetime of being able to live clutter-free.
